When it comes to submachine guns (SMGs), two strong contenders often come up in discussions among firearms enthusiasts and professionals alike – the HK MP7 and the PP-19 Bizon. Both of these compact, lightweight firearms offer significant advantages in close-quarter combat, yet they differ in many respects. In this comparison, we’ll delve into the specifics of each weapon to determine their strengths, weaknesses, and ideal use cases.

Design and Build

The HK MP7 is a German-engineered SMG designed by Heckler & Koch. It was developed in response to NATO’s call for a Personal Defense Weapon (PDW) that could penetrate body armor typically encountered on the modern battlefield. The MP7 is noted for its futuristic design and compact size, measuring just over 16 inches with the stock retracted and weighing approximately 4.63 lbs.

Conversely, the PP-19 Bizon is a Russian-designed SMG created by Izhmash. It was developed in the early 1990s by a team led by Victor Kalashnikov, son of the legendary inventor of the AK-47. The Bizon is unique in its use of a helical magazine, which affords it a compact profile and a higher ammunition capacity, albeit at a greater length of approximately 27.5 inches and a weight of roughly 4.85 lbs.

Ammunition Compatibility

The HK MP7 fires the specialized 4.6×30mm cartridge, designed to offer superior penetration at range, particularly against body armor. This round was designed to balance high velocity with manageable recoil, giving the operator greater control during automatic fire.

In contrast, the PP-19 Bizon is versatile in terms of ammunition, typically using the 9×18mm Makarov or the more powerful 9×19mm Parabellum, with versions also chambered in 7.62×25mm Tokarev and others. This flexibility can be crucial in areas where specific ammunition types are more readily available or preferred.

Performance

In terms of performance, the MP7 is prized for its exceptional rate of fire, clocking in at approximately 950 rounds per minute. This allows operators to deliver a high volume of fire rapidly, a critical factor when facing well-armored adversaries or engaging in dynamic tactical scenarios.

The PP-19 Bizon, while slightly less rapid at around 650 rounds per minute, compensates with its high-capacity helical magazine, holding up to 64 rounds. This feature reduces the frequency of reloads and provides sustained firepower in extended engagements.

Ergonomics and User Experience

The MP7’s ergonomics are tailored for ease of use, featuring a retractable stock, ambidextrous controls, and rails for mounting various optics and accessories. Its compact size makes it ideal for operations in confined environments, such as urban warfare or counter-terrorism operations.

On the other hand, the Bizon’s AK-style structure provides familiarity for those trained on traditional Russian weapons. Its helical magazine, although innovative, can be unwieldy to reload under stress, and its longer overall size may not be as suited for tight spaces.

Table of Specifications

Specification HK MP7 PP-19 Bizon
Length 16.5 inches (stock retracted) 27.5 inches
Weight 4.63 lbs 4.85 lbs
Caliber 4.6×30mm 9×18mm Makarov, 9×19mm Parabellum, others
Rate of Fire 950 rounds/min 650 rounds/min
Magazine Capacity 20, 30, and 40 rounds 63 rounds

Operational Context

The HK MP7’s lightweight, low-recoil design makes it an excellent choice for personal defense roles, particularly in protective details or special operations where operators must navigate tight spaces quickly and efficiently. Its higher velocity rounds are particularly beneficial for piercing modern body armor, which can be a vital advantage in tactical engagements.

In contrast, the PP-19 Bizon serves well in scenarios where ammunition scarcity is a concern, or where suppressive fire is paramount. Its helical magazine allows for prolonged engagements without frequent reloads, and its robust construction is advantageous in less controlled environments. The Bizon’s versatility with different ammunition types also makes it an adaptable tool for various military and law enforcement operations around the world.

Choosing between the HK MP7 and the PP-19 Bizon ultimately comes down to the specific needs and circumstances of the user. If rapid, armor-piercing fire is the priority, and ease of maneuverability in tight spaces is crucial, the MP7 stands out as a superior choice. However, for sustained fire support and versatility in ammunition, the PP-19 Bizon offers unique advantages that can prove essential in diverse operational contexts. Both weapons exemplify innovative firearm engineering tailored to meet the demands of modern combat, and selecting between them should be guided by the tactical requirements at hand.
