Development and Design

The development of the CASA C.101 Aviojet began in the late 1970s with the aim of replacing the outdated Hispano HA-200 Saeta. CASA, in collaboration with the Spanish Air Force, designed the Aviojet as an advanced trainer that could provide pilots with experience in flying supersonic aircraft.

The C.101 Aviojet features a low-wing configuration with a T-tail design. The aircraft has seating for two crew members in a tandem arrangement, with the instructor in the rear seat. It is powered by a single Garrett TFE731-2-2N turbofan engine, which provides a maximum thrust of 3,000 lbf. The Aviojet has a maximum speed of Mach 0.82 and a range of approximately 1,000 nautical miles.

Operational History

The CASA C.101 Aviojet entered service with the Spanish Air Force in 1980, replacing the Saeta as the primary jet trainer. The aircraft was widely utilized for training pilots in advanced flight techniques, including aerobatics and instrument flight. In addition to its training role, the Aviojet also served as a light attack aircraft, capable of carrying external stores such as rockets, bombs, and gun pods.

Over the years, the Aviojet underwent several upgrades to improve its capabilities and extend its service life. The upgraded versions included enhanced avionics, improved navigation systems, and increased weapons-carrying capacity.
