Development

The development of the OMTAS began in the early 2000s with the aim of designing a new generation anti-tank missile for the Turkish Armed Forces. The project was led by the Turkish defense company Roketsan, in collaboration with other national defense organizations.

Features

The OMTAS missile is designed to provide superior anti-tank capabilities with a range of up to 4 kilometers. It is equipped with advanced guidance systems, including laser-based semi-active homing and fire-and-forget capabilities.

The missile utilizes a tandem-charge warhead, which consists of two separate shaped charges. This allows the OMTAS to effectively penetrate even the most heavily armored tanks. The tandem-charge design is particularly effective against reactive armor, which is commonly used to protect modern tanks.

Performance

The OMTAS has demonstrated excellent performance during various tests and trials. It has a high hit probability even against moving targets, thanks to its advanced guidance systems. The missile can engage targets from different directions, enabling it to effectively neutralize threats in complex battlefield environments.

The OMTAS is also capable of engaging both stationary and moving targets with high precision. Its advanced guidance systems ensure that the missile hits the intended target accurately, minimizing collateral damage.

Operational Use

The OMTAS is currently in service with the Turkish Armed Forces. It has been integrated into various platforms, including infantry fighting vehicles and helicopters. The missile provides Turkish forces with a potent anti-tank capability, allowing them to effectively engage armored vehicles and fortifications.

Comparison with Previous ATGMs

The OMTAS represents a significant improvement over previous generations of Turkish anti-tank guided missiles. Its longer range, advanced guidance systems, and superior penetration capabilities make it a highly effective weapon against armored targets.

International Interest

The OMTAS has garnered interest from several countries around the world. Its advanced capabilities and competitive price point make it an attractive option for countries seeking to enhance their anti-tank capabilities. Roketsan has already secured export contracts with several nations, further validating the missile’s performance and reliability.

Conclusion

The OMTAS is a testament to Turkey’s indigenous defense industry capabilities. It showcases the country’s ability to develop and produce advanced weapon systems to meet the operational needs of its armed forces. With its superior anti-tank capabilities and proven performance, the OMTAS is poised to become a formidable asset for Turkey and its allies.
