Overview

The AU-F1 GCT, also known as the Général de Corps d’Armée Tracté (Tracked Army Corps General), is a self-propelled 155 mm howitzer. It was designed and manufactured by the French company GIAT Industries, now known as Nexter Systems, in the late 1960s.

This heavy artillery system is mounted on a tracked chassis, which provides mobility and allows it to operate in various terrains. The AU-F1 GCT is equipped with a powerful 155 mm gun that can fire a range of projectiles, including high-explosive shells, smoke shells, and illumination rounds.

Firepower

The AU-F1 GCT is capable of firing up to 6 rounds per minute with a maximum range of around 26 kilometers. Its firepower is derived from the advanced hydraulic loading system, which enables rapid loading and firing of shells. The system also features an automatic shell ejection mechanism, ensuring continuous firing with minimal downtime.

The 155 mm gun can be elevated to different angles, allowing the AU-F1 GCT to deliver indirect fire support over long distances. It is highly accurate and can hit targets with precision, making it a formidable weapon on the battlefield.

Mobility

The tracked chassis of the AU-F1 GCT provides excellent mobility, allowing it to traverse rough terrains and overcome obstacles. The system is powered by a V8 diesel engine, which provides sufficient power to move the heavy artillery piece swiftly. Its tracks provide stability and traction, ensuring that the AU-F1 GCT can maneuver in challenging environments.

In addition to its mobility, the AU-F1 GCT is also capable of amphibious operations. It can ford water obstacles with the help of its flotation screen and propulsion system, making it a versatile artillery system for various combat scenarios.

Protection

The AU-F1 GCT features advanced armor protection, which shields the crew and vital components from enemy fire. The armored hull is designed to withstand small arms fire, shrapnel, and artillery fragments.

Furthermore, the AU-F1 GCT is equipped with a smoke grenade launcher system, which can be used to provide additional concealment and protection during combat operations.

Role in Modern Warfare

The AU-F1 GCT has played a significant role in various conflicts around the world. Its long-range capabilities and high rate of fire make it a valuable asset for providing fire support to ground forces. It can deliver sustained firepower over long distances, neutralizing enemy threats and providing cover for friendly forces.

In addition to its offensive capabilities, the AU-F1 GCT can also be used for defensive operations.
